Masindi

Masindi District is situated in the North West of Uganda, on the edge of the Western Rift Valley, encompassing a large proportion of Murchison Falls National Park. It varies between pastoral lands for grazing cattle and agricultural lands used mainly for subsistence farming but also for larger industries, such as tobacco.

Situated on the old travel route between Mombasa and Zaire (as it was then) the town boasts the oldest hotel in Uganda, one which counts Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Ernest Hemingway and Michael Palin as former guests.

It is a melting pot of different cultures, with an estimated 57 languages spoken in the district. Various Ugandan tribes, including Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s) from the conflict in the North of the country, intermingle with settlers from DR Congo and even Kenya.

In 2008 our team, led by Chris Marsh, completed a detailed baseline survey of Pakanyi sub-county (within Masindi). The results revealed just 31% protected water source coverage, 10% improved latrine coverage and 6% hand washing facility coverage, slightly lower than official figures. This may be a question of functionality as out of 32 sources protected,  just 21 were functional.

Our team in Masindi is managed by John Allen, who not only acts as our Project Area Manager but also has the extra duty of providing a comprehensive donor liaison service for our major partner. Along with John there is a financial administrator, technical supervisor, maintenance supervisor and a team of community development officers.
