Luwero
Luwero is a district in central Uganda. Like many other Ugandan districts, it is named after its ‘chief town’. Luwero was the site of a fierce insurgency and brutal counter-insurgency that left many thousands of civilians dead before the National Resistance Army of Yoweri Museveni came to power in 1986.
The ‘killing fields’ of the Luwero triangle as it became known left a traumatic legacy and a people with tremendous need. The Bishop of Luwero invited the Trust to work in the Diocese to address the most basic of requirements – the provision of clean water, sanitation and hygiene. The Luwero project area was born and set about constructing wells under DfID and WaterAid funding.
Since then, a partnership with Plan Uganda has enabled Busoga Trust to up-scale good sanitation and hygiene in the district, mainly in the sub-counties of Makulubita, Kalagala, Nyimbwa, Luwero and Kikyusa. The funding has helped Busoga Trust to broaden its efforts of reaching out to People Living With Aids (PLWA), Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC), by integrating HIV/AIDS into its on going hygiene and sanitation project through a Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) initiative among the supported communities. You can read about work carried out through the Plan/Busoga Trust Partnership in the USAID report: Opportunities for Sanitation Marketing in Uganda
Luwero is managed by Moses Mugabane and his team. Moses had worked for the trust for over a decade, previously running the maintenance programme in Busoga.
