Share a Little Sunshine
As you sit down at your desk, click the link and open this story it is likely that the view from your window is one of increasingly dark and autumnal skies. Summer has drifted too far south to breathe any discernible warmth over these island shores and the long nights of winter are slowly pushing their way into our consciousness. So, perhaps this isn’t the best time to remind you of what a glorious summer we all enjoyed in 2014; nowhere more so than the picturesque village of Brokweir, the Wye Valley, Gloucestershire. Home to resident BT fundraisers and all round champions of the good, husband and wife team Jonathan Cockburn & Louise Russell.
Not content with last year’s grueling cycle ride from Brokweir to Paris, this year Jonathan & Louise set out to travel well, not very far, deciding to adventure to the far side of the village and into Clouds Rest, their generous and inviting neighbour’s, idyllic cottage garden.
They didn’t travel alone either, joining them on this epic journey were 40 of Brokweir’s most discerning residents, each of whom paid £20 for the privilege. Awaiting them in the rich and verdant garden was an afternoon of food, music and wine, plenty of wine.
Sat atop a terrace, sheltered from the sun’s penetrating rays, the guests enjoyed, along with the achingly beautiful views, a lovingly prepared, summer inspired four course menu including plump, freshly picked raspberries and locally produced cheeses. Yes, I know it’s hard to hear.
Accompanying the meal were Jonathan & Louise’s musical son Harry and his equally musical partner, Rachael. The accomplished musicians joined forces to serenade the chardonnay drenched lunch crowd with a perfectly pitched blend of jazzy summer pop.
Post meal the guests enjoyed a raucous afternoon of quizzes, games and auctions, all of which raised a significant sum of money toward essential clean water projects in rural Uganda. For that we can forgive them for having such a jolly nice time!
