Nakataka well - Sponsered by St. Thomas's
Church (July 2000)
|
This link was born out of the visit of the
Bishop of Luwero, Bishop Evans Kisekke to the UK for the Lambeth
Conference of 1998. The Bishop made a brief visit to the Reverend
Michael Nott, Vicar of both St Thomas's, Rushwick, and Christchurch,
Broadheath, in Worcestershire. The next step was a slide presentation
to both parishes and then to the two primary schools. Meanwhile the
Bishop had chosen the Archdeaconery of Nakasongola as the Uganda link.
St Thomas's congregation set about raising money for a well in
Nakataka village and managed to draw in the village community of
Rushwick to help them.
Now they are collecting for a water catchment scheme for Nakataka
Primary School because the ground there is not suitable for a well.
Meanwhile the Broadheath group set about raising funds for the parish
of Nakasongola itself, partly to help the impoverished clergy and also
to support chosen projects in the parish. So far they have paid for
school desks for an entire class in the primary school, who previously
sat on the dusty floor, trying to balance their exercise books on
their laps, and for a new building to be used both as a nursery school
and as a facility for the parish. |

No one from Worcestershire has visited Uganda
so far so all the arrangements, like getting the desks made, has been
done by Frances David or other go-betweens. The next step must be a
visit and one couple are now actively considering a trip. Experience
shows that once someone from the UK has visited their link things
really take off. |
