Most people in Uganda have to drink water like this.

When a well is dug by hand, the well-shaft is lined with timbers to
stop it collapsing.

Sometimes bricks are used instead.

Once the shaft is dug, a protective grill is placed over it to stop
people falling in.

The completed well is finished in concrete and a concrete drain is
built to take excess water away from the well to stop it becoming
stagnant and dangerous.

In many cases nowadays, a well is not necessarily the best option when
trying to provide clean water for a village. Normally, wells are dug
by hand, but when the water table is too far below ground level or
when rock is too hard, the drilling rig is used.

Other schemes for water provision include rain water run-off tanks.
These are very effective and can store large amounts of water.

Whichever way the water gets to the villagers, there is always a party
to celebrate a new source being provided: |
